Gold began August 2026 near $4,000 an ounce, a level it had held since the spring, and traded above $4,600 three weeks later. Measured from the trough, the move was the strongest run since January. Three catalysts landed within days of one another: a soft labour-market print, two cool inflation readings that reset expectations for the September Federal Reserve meeting, and the crossing of $40 trillion in US federal debt.
Real rates did the work
The year’s two large moves have the same explanation read in opposite directions. Gold set a record near $5,600 in January on safe-haven demand and expectations of easier policy. The second quarter reversed it: conflict in the Middle East pushed oil and inflation expectations higher, markets priced a more hawkish Fed, and gold fell roughly twenty-two to twenty-four per cent — its weakest quarter since 2013. August reversed the reversal, as moderating inflation and weaker employment data cooled rate-hike expectations. Wall Street now anticipates one hike this year where it recently expected two.
The common variable is the expected real rate. Both the selloff and the rebound trace back to it, which is why a single payrolls print — a volatile series subject to large revisions — was able to move the metal several per cent in a session.
Volatility is not confined to gold
For scale on how disorderly the year has been across precious metals: silver futures peaked above $115 in 2026 and traded near $63 in early August. Against that, a twenty per cent drawdown in gold is the mild version of the same story.
What a physical desk actually manages
Price direction is not the operational problem. Settlement risk in a market moving five per cent in a week is. Three practices matter more in this environment than in a quiet one.
Benchmarked pricing. Lots priced against the LBMA AM or PM fix, with a stated and published treatment charge, remove the argument that arises when a quotation is held open across a violent session. Producers and counterparties see the same reference.
Cleared funds only. Wire settlement in cleared funds, with no third-party payment and no cash, keeps the delivery obligation and the payment obligation on the same clock. Advance-against-delivery structures are precisely what breaks when the price gaps.
Documentation that travels with the metal. Assay dossier, licence reference and chain-of-custody record attached to each consignment mean a lot can be re-priced or re-routed without re-opening the question of what it is and where it came from.
The structural bid underneath
Beneath the monthly noise sits official-sector demand, which reached 533 tonnes in the first half of 2026 and continued through the entire drawdown. Central-bank buying is reserve policy rather than a view on price, and it is the reason dips have kept finding a floor. A market can be both highly volatile month to month and structurally supported year to year; 2026 has been a demonstration of exactly that.
